What is it ?
Redox reactions include all chemical reaction in which atoms have their oxidation state changed. In organic chemistry reduction in two ways……… Addition of hydrogen to a molecule or Electrolytically . When an organic molecule take of an electron from metal electrode (cathode) or organic solvent, then it is known as electro reducton.
Name electro reduction
BIRCH REDUCTION : When an aromatic ring are reduce by alkali metal in liquid ammonia in presence of alcohol, 1,4 addition of hydrogen takes place and non-conjugated cyclohexadine are produced.
Another electro reduction
Pinacol Formation: when keton dipped in a metal electrode it form resonance stabilize radical anion. This anion dimmerzis to form pinacol. It is a electro reduction of carbonyl compound.
