What is MIMO?

A technique for boosting wireless bandwidth and range by taking advantage of multiplexing.
There can be various MIMO configurations. For example, a 2x2 MIMO configuration has 2 antennas to transmit signals (from base station) and 2 antennas to receive signals (mobile terminal). Similarly we have 4x4 MIMO 8x8 MIMO etc.

Why MIMO?

Wireless channel introduces

Fading: multiple paths with different phases add up at the receiver, giving a random amplitude signal.
ISI: multiple paths come with various delays, causing intersymbol interference.
CCI: Co-channel users create interference to the target user

Functions of MIMO

spatial multiplexing:

In spatial multiplexing, a high rate signal is split into multiple lower rate streams and each stream is transmitted from a different transmit antenna in the same frequency channel.
Spatial multiplexing is a very powerful technique for increasing channel capacity at higher Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR).
