Siri (software)

[attachment=34254]

Siri (pronounced /ˈsɪri/) is an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator which works as an application for Apple's iOS. The application uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Web services. Apple claims that the software adapts to the user's individual preferences over time and personalizes results, and performing tasks such as finding recommendations for nearby restaurants, or getting directions.[2]
Siri was originally introduced as an iOS application available in the App Store by Siri, Inc., which was acquired by Apple on April 28, 2010.[3] Siri, Inc. had announced that their software would be available for BlackBerry and for Android-powered phones, but all development efforts for non-Apple platforms were cancelled after the acquisition by Apple

Founding

Siri, Inc. was founded in 2007 by Dag Kittlaus (CEO), Adam Cheyer (VP Engineering), and Tom Gruber (CTO/VP Design), together with Norman Winarsky from SRI International's venture group. On October 13, 2008, Siri announced it had raised an $8.5 million Series A financing round, led by Menlo Ventures and Morgenthaler Ventures.[7] In November 2009, Siri raised a $15.5 million Series B financing round from the same investors as in their previous round, but led by Hong-Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.[8] Dag Kittlaus left his position as CEO of Siri at Apple after the launch of the iPhone 4S

DARPA involvement

With Siri, Apple is using the results of more than four years of research funded by DARPA via SRI International's Artificial Intelligence Center through the Personalized Assistant that Learns Program and Cognitive Agent that Learns and Organizes Program CALO.
This includes the combined work from research teams from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, theUniversity of Rochester, the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, and Stanford University. This technology has come a long way with dialog and natural language understanding, machine learning, evidential and probabilistic reasoning, ontology and knowledge representation, planning, reasoning and service delegation.

Vehicle Integration

In June, 2012, Apple SVP Scott Forstall announced that Apple had been in discussions with automobile manufacturers, and companies, such as BMW, Land Rover, Toyota, Honda, Jaguar,Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, General Motors, and Audi, and that Siri would be in vehicles of these marques soon, "12 months", as he stated. It has been dubbed the "Eyes Free System", which utilizes a button, located in the steering wheel of a vehicle using the technology. The screen of the device from which the "Eyes Free System" is coming from will be black, so to avoid distraction while operating a vehicle. Forstall stated that the driver would be able to use all of the features from Siri, and the new iOS 6, such as "Turn-By-Turn Navigation", via the "Maps" app, "Make Reservations At Restaurants Via OpenTable", and "Texting or Calling Someone Via Your iPhone", among other functionalities.
This collaboration between Apple, and automobile manufacturers was unprecedented, and stock of Harman International Industries fell by 15%, the day after this partnership was released, due to Harmon's large sector of revenue being providing GPS, Navigation, and Telematics systems for vehicles, many of which were supplied to most of the companies partnering with Apple.
However, some of these carmakers have issued statements conflicting with Apple's. Land Rover and Jaguar stated that, Future models will receive this functionality. . While BMW stated that This functionality will be available in mid-2013... Mercedes Benz stated that, This functionality will be available on our models within the next twelve months, but probably within the next six.. Other automakers issued similar statements, while Chrysler stated They had no knowledge of any developments pertaining to this service.

Geographic limitations

As of May 2012, Siri's functionality is limited in most countries, with maps and local search with Yelp only being available within the United States. For example, asking Siri in the United Kingdom to list local businesses, to navigate somewhere, or to give traffic information, elicits the reply "I can only look for businesses, maps and traffic in the United States, and when you're using U.S. English. Sorry about that." Using Siri within the United States with the English voice (Daniel) elicits a similar response — despite the user's geographic location. Apple intends to add support for additional languages later in 2012, including Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish
