FACIAL RECOGNITION

Facial recognition is a form of computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source.
Face recognition technology uses closed-circuit television to photograph a person’s face. Software then analyzes contours and bone structures and converts them into a code line that is processed through a database of known criminals and their facial codes to seek a match.
It is typically used in security systems.

HISTORY OF FACIAL RECOGNITION

The development stage for facial recognition began in the late 1980s.
Commercially available systems were made available in the 1990s. While many people first heard about facial recognition after September 11th, 2001

WORKING

It works on five step processing.
CAPTURE
LOCATING IMAGE OR FACE
ANALYSIS OF FACE IMAGE
COMPARISION
MATCH OR NOT MATCH

WEAKNESSES

"Face recognition has been getting pretty good at full frontal faces and 20 degrees off, but as soon as you go towards profile, there've been problems.”
Other conditions where face recognition does not work well include :
poor lighting
Sunglasses
long hair
other objects partially covering the subject’s face
low resolution images.

RECENT IMPLEMENT

In 2006, the performance of the latest face recognition algorithms were evaluated in the Face Recognition Grand Challenge.
High-resolution face images, 3-D face scans, and iris images were used in the tests.
The results indicated that the new algorithms are 10 times more accurate than the face recognition algorithms of 2002 and 100 times more accurate than those of 1995.

ADVANTAGES

There are many benefits to face recognition systems such as its convenience and social acceptability. All you need is your picture taken for it to work.
Face recognition is easy to use and in many cases it can be performed without a person even knowing.
Face recognition is also one of the most inexpensive biometric in the market and its prices should continue to go down.

CONCLUSION

Face recognition technologies have been associated generally with top secure applications.
Today the core technologies have evolved and the cost of equipments is going down dramatically due to the integration and the increasing processing power.
Certain application of face recognition technology are now cost effective, reliable and highly accurate.
