[attachment=36734]

Evolution of GPRS

1G Mobile Phones – only Voice facility
2G Mobile Phones – added fax, data and messaging services
3G Mobile Phones – added multimedia facilities to 2G
Phones
To narrow the gap between 2G and 3G – GPRS introduced
also called 2.5G
allows high speed data transfer over conventional GSM and
TDMA

Introduction

GPRS – a standardized packet switched service for
GSM based networks
a little upgrades are required in existing GSM nodes
GPRS Service provides
efficient use of radio resources
fast setup/access time
simultaneous GSM and GPRS , co-existence
without disturbance

GPRS Terminals

GPRS BSS
Functional component – PCU(Packet Control
Unit)
PCU - placed logically between BSS and the
GPRS core network
GPRS NSS
Functional component – MSC, VLR, HLR, EIR
GPRS core network
Functional component – SSGN, GGSN

GPRS Classes

Classes
A – connected to both GPRS and GSM services simultaneously (both voice and data transfer simultaneously)
B – attached to both GPRS and GSM but not simultaneously
(only one either data or voice at one time)
C – attached to either to GPRS or GSM
(particular device can use one of them either voice or data permanently)
