PRESENT STATE AND FUTURE OF MAGNESIUM APPLICATION IN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

INTRODUCTION

-Weight reduction has always been an important objective for aerospace industry

-Aluminium is a traditional light metal for airborne structures

-The alloys used for today’s aerospace application
are already optimized and weight reduction has
become a more difficult task

-Some of the alternatives may be laminates such as glare or fiber reinforced plastics

-The application of non metallic materials is limited owing to limited properties

-Magnesium as it is well known is one of the lightest structural material available on the Earth

-The family of Magnesium and Magnesium wrought materials could be an excellent alternative because of their low density, rather good mechanical properties and metallic behavior

AEROSPACE BACKGROUND OF MAGNESIUM

-Historically Magnesium has been used in aircrafts since the thirties and hit a high in the fifties

-Most of the civil and military aircrafts built in the period used lots of Magnesium

-TU-95MS: 1550 kg of magnesium

PRESENT SITUATION OF MAGNESIUM APPLICATION IN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

-The amount of Magnesium in the former soviet union aircraft reduced in the beginning of 1990s from hundreds to dozens of kgs per plane

-In the western aerospace industry Magnesium has not been used yet by major manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus

-Situation is different in the helicopter industry where Magnesium is used in cast gearboxes and other non structural elements
