Development of Motorcycle Anti-Theft Alarm

[attachment=46345]

Abstract.

This paper reports the design and development of an innovative anti-theft alarm system for
motorcycles. The design concept is based on two-way communication strategy between the vehicle and
owner. Radio frequency (RF) link technology is employed to achieve two-way communication. Details of
subsystems, their functions, and operating steps are described. A prototype of the alarm is developed and
tested. The results show that the prototype alarm performed well within the distances of 100 meters in open
space and 30 meters in crowded areas. When fully developed, it is expected that this innovative alarm system
could prevent the motorcycles from being stolen effectively although it can never achieve 100 % thief-proofs.

Introduction

Currently motorcycle thefts happen very often and tend to be more increasing intense. Although the
Royal Thai Police is trying to trace criminal gang and arrests them. The thieves have many techniques how
to steal and spend short time. It also smuggle out to neighboring countries for sale through several routes. It
is difficult to track the criminal and be difficult to track the stolen motorcycle to send back to the owner. One
way to help prevent the problem is providing useful information for the owners to be careful about their
vehicle so that it would not be stolen easily.
The statistic of the motorcycle theft is in the second rank of the general theft (Criminal statistic of
interest, throughout the kingdom of Thailand)[1]. During 2001-2009, the average rate of the stolen
motorcycle is 18,886 units per year. The lost trend is still high. What is the way to reduce lost?
The evolution of anti-theft device began after the first motorcycle was produced in 1885 by Gottlieb
Daimler [2]. In 1924, the mechanical lock or pad lock of motorcycle for security has occurred [3]. Since then,
the wireless remote control for motorcycle security system was developed. Until now, research and
development of device has developed to two-way communication between owner and motorcycle. This
decreases the number of stolen motorcycle and makes it more difficult to steal. However, skilled and
determined thieves can still overcome the electronic immobilizer systems [4]. On the other hand, the
evolution of anti-theft device does not affect to the number of motorcycle lost in Thailand.

Existing preventive measures

The existing theft-protective equipment can be categorized into 2 groups: the factory-installed one to the
motorcycle and the optional one which the owner provides to make it more secured.
• Electrical system lock
It is the ready-installed lock with the motorcycle. The key will control all motorcycle electrical system. If
the key is not at the position “ON”, the electrical system will not work; therefore, the motorcycle cannot be
started up the engine.

Deficiency of existing security system

• Electrical system lock: The weakness of this lock is the easiness to bypass for starting motorcycle
engine.
• Mechanical lock: Its mechanism is not complex and strong enough for destruction or dismantlement
by simple tools.
• Electronic anti-theft device: The control module, antenna and power supply of control module are
the weakness of this lock. It is easy to destroy.
1.3 Objective of this work
To develop the security system of motorcycle anti-theft alarm that can detect all theft acts and inform the
motorcycle owner immediately.
2. Development Work Steps
From studying an overview of current products for the motorcycle anti-theft, it is found the two-way
motorcycle alarm is an interesting product for research and development. Determining the class and price of
product is essential to establish a framework for the study. The average price of devices which owners accept
to purchase for the installation should be less than 5% of the average price of a motorcycle used in the
current market.

Existing knowledge study

• Study from current products in the market
Internet is a data source. From studying the trade data, specification and feature of the protection device,
the countries in Asia is a top ranking of a production base and export of the world. The study focuses on the
information from those countries.
• Literature reviews
Literature in this field is very little. Most of the research and development of motorcycle anti-theft
devices will be available in a business context only. For reason of commercial competition, the research
processes are confidential. Published book or journal concerning the protection device is limited, as written
in the introduction section.

Problems and needs identify

The beginning of this step started with interviewing motorcycle owners or users about the problems and
their needs. The main problem is that all locks cannot prevent their motorcycle from thieves. Even if they
used the multi-point of lock but many motorcycle were still stolen. What the motorcycle owners need is a
device which has capability to prevent their motorcycle and it certainly alerts violation in case of theft. In
addition, its price should be cheap
