A Seminar On ZIGBEE TECHNOLOGY

[attachment=47539]

Introduction:-

ZigBee is a Ad-hoc networking technology for LR-WPAN.
Based On IEEE 802.15.4 standard that defines the PHY
and MAC Layers for ZigBee.
Intended to network inexpensive devices.
Low in cost ,complexity & power consumption as
compared to competing technologies.

The Basics of ZigBee:-

Implemented on IEEE 802.15.4 D18 Protocol
(ratified in May 2003)
Bi-directional Communications – half duplex
Star or Peer-to-Peer operation.
Support for low latency devices (few ms maximum)
CSMA-CA channel access.
Fully handshaked protocol for transfer reliability.
Low complexity: 26 primitives versus 131 primitives
for 802.15.1 (Bluetooth)
Low power consumption (AA batteries powered)
AES-128 Security

ZigBee Device Types:-

ZigBee coordinator (ZC):

The most capable device, the coordinator forms the root of the network tree and might bridge to other networks. There is exactly one ZigBee coordinator in each network. It is able to store information about the network, including acting as the repository for security keys.
ZigBee Router (ZR):
Routers can act as an intermediate router, passing data from other devices.

ZigBee End Device (ZED):

Contains just enough functionality to talk to its parent node (either the coordinator or a router); it cannot relay data from other devices. It requires the least amount of memory, and therefore can be less expensive to manufacture than a ZR or ZC.

What Is the ZigBee Alliance?

An organization with a mission to define reliable, cost-effective, low-power, wirelessly networked, monitoring and control products based on an open global standard
Alliance provides
Upper layer stack and application profiles
Compliance and certification testing
Branding
Result is a set of interoperable solutions recognizable in the market
Eight promoter companies
Ember, Free scale, Honeywell, Invensys, Mitsubishi, Motorola, Philips and Samsung
A rapidly growing list (Over 120 participants) of industry leaders worldwide committed to providing ZigBee-compliant products and solutions
Companies include semiconductor manufacturers, wireless IP providers, OEMs, and end-users

How Is ZigBee Related to IEEE 802.15.4?

ZigBee takes full advantage of a physical radio and MAC layers specified by IEEE 802.15.4 (lower layers)
ZigBee adds logical network, security and application software (higher layers)
ZigBee continues to work closely with the IEEE to ensure an integrated and complete solution for the market

CONCLUSION:-

Will play a vital role in the mass adoption of cost effective, low power, mesh networking technology for monitoring and control applications, based on an open global standard.
More than 120 companies have joined within 2 months.
Near Future more flexibility and cost savings for consumers and greater control over household appliances.
Used for campus-wide electrical and security systems from a single computer.
Above all enable sensor networks to blanket a city to check for bio-terror hazards such as biological bombs.
ZigBee is ready, but are we ready for this wireless revolution?
