Keeping Edinburgh on track: City centre temporary traffic management for Edinburgh tram construction

ABSTRACT

Traffic management solutions developed by AECOM far exceed standard Chapter 8 lining and signing and include installing traffic signals at priority junctions, kerb realignments, parking and movement restrictions and network wide CLF and UTC changes. The design process is underpinned by a range of local and wider area model testing to determine the expected impact on city centre capacity. Temporary junction installations are to permanent standard, fully providing for pedestrians, including use of temporary tactile paving.
AECOM provided major input into the design and successful implementation of the closure to Edinburgh’s historic Princes Street during 2009. The chosen diversion route had to accommodate over 400 buses per hour while continuing to maintain Public transport journey times; provide servicing arrangements for the retail district and facilitate free flowing traffic.
Tie were aware that closing Princes St was the biggest and most critical piece of traffic management the project would have to implement and that the eyes of Edinburgh would be on us.
The closure was a resounding success, Head of Transport at CEC, considering the closure the most successful piece of temporary traffic management of this scale I have ever seen implemented. Expected traffic delays were estimated at 10 minutes, however, delays of only 2 minutes were recorded.
