Evolution of Optical Networks

[attachment=49204]

Why Optical Networks?

Explosive Growth in Internet
-Three dimensional Growth: Users, Geographical, Traffic load
Advent of Bandwidth-intensive Applications including
large multimedia contents
- Ex. WWW browsing, Video conferencing, video on
demand, IP phone, Virtual reality etc.
Need for high bandwidth, scalable infrastructure

Advantages of optical Fiber

* Low attenuation and low distortion
and hence high Distance-Bandwidth Product
* Immunity to EM Interference and Crosstalk
* Cost per unit bandwidth – comparatively very low
* Secured Communication – Signal tapping secretly is impossible
* Low power requirement and material use
* Easy scalability using WDM Technology

Long-Haul Networks

Long-Haul network spanning hundreds to thousands of km typically
Consists of OXCs at its nodes interconnected by a mesh of fibers
Traffic from the end users collected by the access networks and fed into the
long-haul networks through metro networks
High-bandwidth traffic carried on a long-haul WDM network from one end to
the other by the wavelength channels available on fibers
