A Miniature Broadband Multilayer Microstrip Antenna

[attachment=49654]

Abstract

A novel Compact Broadband Multilayer Microstrip
Antenna is presented in this paper. The VSWR, gain and
radiation pattern of this antenna are simulated. The measured
VSWR of it is also shown in the paper. The results are discussed
in detail.

INTRODUCTION

Microstrip patch antennas (MPA) have the advantages of
low profile, light weight, easy fabrication and integration with
other circuit elements. However, it inherits narrow bandwidth
and relative large size in microwave frequency range. In
recent years, small-size wide bandwidth microstrip antennas
are of great interest in various mobile systems, pager, cordless
telephone and many portable wireless communications. In
many applications the requirements on both bandwidth and
physical size are quite stringent. [1]
In the last several years, much intensive research has been
done to develop size reduction and bandwidth-enhancement
techniques. Those techniques include using two unequal arms
to obtain two closely staggered resonant modes to achieve a
wide impedance bandwidth [2], the employment of a thick
substrate with a low dielectric constant patch[3] and the
broadband U-slot patch with a shorting wall [4,5] or a shorting
pin [5,6]. Another size reduction technique is proposed in [7].
The size of a U-slot patch antenna is halved by removing half
of the patch area along the line of symmetry. It was found that
the performances of the half U-slot patch antenna are
comparable to the full U-slot patch antenna. More recently, a
novel super small antenna has been proposed in [8]. This kind
of small antenna is very small, it is just about eighth
wavelength. However, the size of the patch antenna has been
much reduced, but the bandwidth of it is very narrow. Its
bandwidth is about 1% or less.

CONCLUSION

In this paper, a miniature broadband multilayer microstrip
antenna has been demonstrated. The impedance bandwidth,
gain and radiation pattern of this antenna are shown. The size
of the antenna is small. The whole length and the width of the
antenna including the ground plane both are 40mm, the height
of the antenna is 9mm. and the central working frequency is
about 1.6GHz. The bandwidth of the origin antenna is about
1% or less.
