DETERMINATION OF MOISTURE CONTENT IN COAL

Theory :

The proximate analysis is approximate analysis which gives a
general idea about the composition of the coal. The parameters
like the moisture content, volatile matter, ash and carbon content
can be found out. The moisture in the coal adds to the weight of
coal there by increasing the cast of storage and transportation of
coal.
Increase in the moisture content reduces the calorific value and
quality of coal. For finding out the moisture and ash the oven is
required and for the volatile matter the muffle furnace is required.
To obtain the moisture the coal, sample is heated to 110oC for
one hour in the oven. Loss in weight gives the moisture.

Procedure :

1. Take a clean and empty china crucible with lid.
2. Adjust the balance to zero reading.
3. Take the wt. of empty crucible with lid and record the wt. as
W1 gm.
4. Add about 1 gm of powdered coal sample in crucible.
5. Weigh the crucible with coal sample covered by lid. Record
this wt. as W2 gm.
6. Heat the coal sample in the crucible at 1100 C for 1hour in an
electric oven.
7. While heating ensure that the crucible is uncovered by lid.
8. Remove the crucible from oven after 1 hour with the help of
pair of tongs.
9. Cover it by lid immediately and cool it.
10. Weigh this cooled crucible. Record this wt. as W3 gm.
11. Calculate the wt. of moisture and percentage of moisture in
the given coal sample.

Result :

The % of moisture in the given coal sample = _____
