DETERMINATION OF BARIUM AS BARIUM SULPHATE

Theory :

First Fe is removed as Fe(OH)3 , by adding 1:1 NH3 into the
solution Barium can be precipitated as barium sulphate in hot
dilute (2N) H2SO4 from remaining solution and weighed as such
on ignition .

Procedure :

1) Dilution – Dilute the given solution to 100 ml with distilled
water in measuring flask. Shake well, pipette out 50 ml of this
diluted solution in 250 ml beaker and dilute it to 100 ml by adding
50 ml of distilled water.
2) Precipitation of Fe(OH)3 , and removal of NH3 -
To the above solution add 4-5 ml of conc. HNO3. Boil this solution
for about 10 minutes to convert Fe(II) to Fe(III) .

Result : 1) 50 ml of diluted solution gave = ________ Kg of BaSO4
2) Quantity of BaCl2 .2H2O in the given solution = _________Kg.
3) Amount of Barium in the given solution
= _________ Kg .
