Impact of Media on Personality Development of Adolescents

Abstract

Personality is the total quality of an individual due to bodily pattern, mental integration and chemistry internal functions including almost all types of introvert and extrovert traits. Though the traits of any individual’s personality development own to heredity, but electronic form of environment may also be considered equally important. To investigate the addiction level of T.V, standardized addiction scale will be used. Furthermore, to determine personality level (extraversion, neuroticism) by using standardized scale. Subjects will be adolescent’s boys and girls studying in different schools and colleges of Faisalabad. The collected data will be analyzed by applying appropriate statistical techniques to interpret the results.

Introduction

The term personality connotes, variously, physical attractiveness, charm, good nature, ease of manner, outgoingness or any other form of behavior or attitude that induces a favorable impression. Every phrase which indicates a way, in which an individual will act at a given situation, is a description of one aspect of personality. The distinguishing pattern of psychological characteristics’ thinking, feeling and behaving that differentiates us from others and leads us to act consistently across situations (Cornbach, 1957).
The development of personality is conceived primarily as a process of learning which arises when the infant`s innate behavior repertorire is exposed to environmental circumstances. Personality and character develop chiefly during the early years. All are born with heredity potential that is shaped and molded by our surroundings or our culture. Heredity and environment both play a major part in the development of person`s personality.
Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax and internet.
Over the last decade the daily experience of adolescents has been transformed by developments in electronic media, including the computer, the Internet, and cell phones. Relative rarities only a generation ago, they are the daily tools of communication, information, and amusement for a majority of adolescents. Electronic media of communication, radio, movies and television which reveal to the adolescent social norms for particular ages that frequently conflict with parental standards.

Objectives:

• To investigate the addiction level of T.V of adolescents.
• To determine television styles of adolescent.
• To determine personality level (extraversion, neuroticism) of adolescents.

Review of Literature:

Edward (1950), among many other things that the television families listened less to radio, did less reading, spent less time in movies, and spent less time in driving for pleasure of participating in sports than the non television families.
James (1966) reported that among some adolescent who are extremists about viewing television, consequences to health have been detected. Eye experts warn that special care should be taken with TV viewing. Proper conditions are important improper condition can cause eye problems. The most common complaint against television, in respect to children`s health, is that it attracts adolescent away from outdoor exercises and other types of reaction that every growing child needs.

Materials and Methods:

Participants in the study will be adolescents (girls and boys) of school and colleges. Sample size will be determined by random sampling. T.V addiction scale, personality inventory will be used for collection of data in this study. The collected data will be analyzed by appropriate statistical techniques to interpret the results.
