TECHNICAL SEMINAR REPORT ON ADAPTIVE VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

ABSTRACT

As the technology advances, more and more systems are introduced which will look after the user’s comfort. Few years before hard switches were used as keys. Now-a-days soft touch keypads are much popular in the market. These keypads give an elegant look and a better feel. Virtual Keyboard is just another example of today’s computer trend of µsmaller and faster.
Adaptable Virtual Keyboard has no physical appearance. Currently keyboards are static and their interactivity and usability would increase if they were made dynamic and adaptable. Thus we see that the new technology always has more benefits and is more user-friendly.

INTRODUCTION

In computer systems, the actual processors, are more likely to become outdated than to actually wear out. But there are parts of a computer system that are more susceptible to wear and tear. As the technology advances, more and more systems are introduced which will look after the user’s comfort. Few years before hard switches were used as keys. Now-a-days soft touch keypads are much popular in the market. These keypads give an elegant look, they give a better feel. They are dust-proof and has got much more life than the other keypads. Thus we see that the new technology always has more benefits and is more user-friendly.
Computing is now not limited to desktops and laptops, it has found its way into mobile devices like palm tops and even cell phones. But what has not changed for the last 50 or so odd years is the input device, the good old QWERTY keyboard.
We are presenting here a next generation technology in this area, which is the Adaptable Virtual Keyboard. As the name suggests the virtual keypad has no physical appearance. In the current scenario we use keyboards which have specific size and specific imprints on the keys. The interactivity and usability of keyboards would surely increase if it could display a symbol for the current function associated with the key or if the language of the keyboard could be changed.

VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

• A Virtual Keyboard is a projection keyboard that is projected and touched on any surface.
• A virtual keyboard consists of a laser that projects an image of a keyboard onto a
flat surface which can then be typed on as if it were actually there.
For the first time mobile device users can actually type normally on a virtual keyboard , enabling them to work quickly and effectively, taking the pain and frustration out of existing minuscule keyboards and handwriting recognition software.
• The keyboard watches your fingers movements and translates that action into
keystrokes in the device. A system called the P-ISM will combine the virtual technology with a small video projector to create a portable computer about the size of a fountain pen.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

The proposed system would have an application frontend which would help initialise the keyboard to the new environment. Any image projected/surface can be a reference and a photo of the same is stored in memory as a reference image. This reference image would be segmented. On running the program we would be able to detect any change in this image by comparing it with the original image stored. After detection of the segment where the change occurs, a virtual key press would be initiated by calling a macro or a function using visual basic. The current function of each key would be displayed for user convenience and can be changed according to user preference. The macro associated with each key can be varied easily from the frontend. This would make the keyboard truly adaptable.

ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS

ADVANTAGES:

• It can be projected on any surface or you can type in the plain air.
• Opens a whole new door to keyboard based applications.
• Games can make the maximum utilization of the keyboard by displaying only those keys that are used in the game.
• Multilingual support: Since the key-displays are reconfigurable, there is no language barrier any more.
• Touch screen is similar to this implementation, but they do require additional effort and are not ergonomically comfortable. User doesn’t have to raise his arm to the monitor every time to use it.
• Keyboards with any resolution can be built according to user’s choice.
• The only keyboard that operates in total darkness.
• It can be useful in places like operation theaters where low noise is essential.
• The typing does not require a lot of force. So easing the strain on wrists and digits.
• The Virtual Keyboard is not restricted to the QWERTY touch typing paradigm, adjustments can be done to the software to fit other touch-typing paradigms as well.
• No driver software necessary, It can be used as a plug and play device
• High battery life.
