ABSTRACT:

Imagine waking up early from bed on a cold day and being in a lethargic (inactive) state; have to perform the daily chores at home right from switching ON/OFF lights to activating water pumps etc...As you make your way to work, would you like to call home from your mobile to make sure you haven’t left anything on during the last-minute rush to get out of the door? ZigBee springs up as a solution to get rid of these irksome domestic jobs and contributes for the realization of a Smart Home. The ‘Smart Home’ with all kinds of appliances from kitchenware to burglar alarms controlled by a single electronic device has been the dream of householders for decades. Now those dreams of domestic bliss will shortly become reality. ZigBee, a new, cheap wireless technology will allow people to remotely-control every electrical device in their home from one gadget.

INTRODUCTION:

ZIGBEE is a hot new personal area network radio communications standard that provides a short range low cost networking capability. Using a tenth of the processor memory requirements of Bluetooth and a fraction of the MIPS needed for 802.11 networking devices ZigBee is the best solution for low data rate short-range communications. ZigBee got its name from the way bees zig and zag while tracking between flowers and relaying information to other bees about where to find resources (router bees!). Its mission is to bring about the existence of a broad range of interoperable consumer devices by establishing open industry specifications for unlicensed, untethered peripheral, control and entertainment devices requiring the lowest cost and lowest power consumption communications between compliant devices anywhere in and around the home.

MESH NETWORKING FOR ZIGBEE:

Mesh networking makes up for the limited power of each individual node by leveraging the ability to relay data through nearby cooperating nodes. This happens transparently and provides redundancy and reliability, assuming the density of nodes is high enough. The overhead of occasional network reconfiguration takes only a few tens of milliseconds.
1. Nodes can be full-function devices (FFDs), which embody all the 802.15.4 functionality and features. This allows them to act as a network coordinator or router. An FFD used as a coordinator needs sufficient memory to hold the network configuration, data, and processing power to self-configure the network in addition to its application task. At least one coordinator is required for a network to form. A router stores and forwards messages to and from devices that can’t directly swap messages. A coordinator or router would use a lot more power than a simple node at the edge of the network and may require line power or be powered from a device with a substantial power supply. For example, a cell phone would be a good choice for a coordinator for a network carried entirely by a person.

BUILDING AUTOMATION:

“The Home” is receiving a lot of attention lately as the place that could do with a lot of new technology. Some of it seems like wishful thinking
Why so many remotes? Right now, the more remotely controlled devices we install in our homes, the more remotes we accumulate. Devices such as TVs, garage door openers, and light and fan controls predominantly support one-way, point-to-point control. They're not interchangeable and they don't support more than one device. Because most remotely controlled devices are proprietary and not standardized among manufacturers, even those remotes used for the same function (like turning on and off lights) are not interchangeable with similar remotes from different manufacturers. In other words, you'll have as many separate remote control units as you have devices to control. Some modern IR remotes enable you to control multiple devices by "learning" transmitting codes. But because the range for IR control is limited by line of sight, they're used predominantly for home entertainment control.

GENERATOR CONTROL:

Almost all the appliances of the present day home need power. Power cut is a very common problem faced in every home. The very imagination of going to the generator located somewhere outside the home and switch it ON on a sunny or a rainy day seems to be strenuous. An automatic generator control system is an excellent solution to this problem which automatically switches ON/OFF according to the necessity.
The mains option in the GUI will convey whether there is power at a particular instant.
Accordingly, if there is no power supply, the coordinator will send a command (pulsed instruction) to the RFD at the generator to switch ON the generator. The reception of the instruction by the RFD and its execution (turning ON the generator) will not consume much of time. There is an ADC attached to the generator which sends feedback to the coordinator whether the generator is switched ON or not and the command to switch ON will be sent again if the generator is not switched ON.

CONCLUSION:

Thus Zigbee is providing novel and effective means for the achievement of WHAN i.e. wireless home area network. As discussed in this paper, the advent of Zigbee would enhance an era of low-cost, low-power wireless controlled systems. The proliferation of remote controls is checked for and the reliability of wireless networks is improved significantly. An automated home will no longer be a dream of a middle class folk. We would like to conclude the paper by stating that with the help of Zigbee the customers can get rid of tedious domestic jobs at home by establishing automated untethered communication between devices.
