INTRODUCTION

The device used in photovoltaic conversion are called solar cell when solar radiation falls on these devices it is converted directly into dc electricity. The principal advantages associated with solar cell are that they have no moving part require little maintenance & work quite satisfactorily with beam or diffuse radiation. Also they are readily adapted for varying power requirement because cell is like a ‘building block’ . the main factors limited their use are that they are still rather costly & that there is very little economy associated with the magnitude of power generated in an insulation. However, significant developments have taken place in last few years. New type of cell have been developed innovative manufacturing processes introduced, conversion efficiencies of existing types increased, costs reduced & the volume of product steadily increased. The present annual word production of photovoltaic device already about 1.5mwp. as a result of the above development, solar cell are now being used extensively in many consumer products & appliances, & it is possible that in the future they may become one of the important sources of power for providing small amount of electrical energy for localized use , particularly in remote locations.
