Blu-ray Home Theatre Systems

Surprisingly, Blu-ray home
theatre systems are not be-
ing advertised so much in
India but are available in
the market, nevertheless.
During an evening stroll in three adja-
cent malls in Delhi I came across quite
a few Blu-ray disc players, which
can make the centre-piece for a good
home theatre system along with an
LCD or LED TV—if you want to add
one to your system.
The brands selling home theatre
systems that I have come across re-
cently include Bose, Sony, Panasonic
and Samsung. But there could be many
more brands available elsewhere in
India. Most are offering 2D disc play-
ers though there are some offering 3D
players as well, such as Samsung’s BD-
D5500 3D player. Incidentally, Bose is
selling home theatre systems with DVD
players and not Blu-ray disc players.
What’s available?
As you will see in the accompanying
boxes in this article, there is sufficient
choice to select from. But you may have
to do some leg work to select the equip-
ment of your choice. Also, don’t feel
shy to ask for demo. Even though you
may not be able to get an exact idea of
the system’s performance in the noisy
showrooms, you will definitely get some
feel of it. Besides, in some showrooms
you may find demo rooms, or separate
areas, to enjoy the music and take a call.
Don’t be in a hurry to buy. Evaluate
various systems based on their looks,
size, sound and the price you would be
paying for them. You may find a system
the best, but the asking price could be
too much. Go ahead if you can afford,
but in most cases it may not be worth
it—unless you happen to be an audio-
phile, or a very keen music lover. Ears
of most of us are unable to distinguish
the best from a good one!
