Introduction
Automobiles powered by electricity
General power source – on board Battery
ICE motors used to extend range
Propelled by electric AC/DC motors
Speed – up to 150kmph
Regenerative braking
Why we will use Electric Cars?
Eco-friendly – reduces environmental pollution
Not dependent on fossil fuel ; foreign crude oil
Alternative of combustion engine car
Running cost low
Principle of Operation of pure Electric Car
Accelerator connected to potentiometers
When driver presses pedal, potentiometer supplies information to motor controller
Battery connected to controller via on/off switches.
The switches are activated whenever the pedal is pressed, thereby supplying power to controller.
DC current from battery converted to pseudo sinewave by PWM method by the converter
This power is supplied to 3 phase AC motor which drives the wheels
Hybrid Electric Cars
Hybrid electric vehicles combine conventional Internal Combustion Engine propulsion system with Electric propulsion system
Power supplied to wheels both from ICE and Electric motor
In some hybrids, electric power is used whenever the car starts and then car switches over to ICE
In some, electric power adds to that supplied by ICE and helps in improving mileage(Km per liter of fuel consumed)
