Introduction
In order to achieve tremendous capacities and unprecedented demand for optical networks has fueled the development of optical network system.
An optical network system comprises of transmission of data employ the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)
WDM in optical networks has been rapidly gaining acceptance as a means to handle the ever-increasing bandwidth demands of network users.
What is an wavelength routed network?
Optical networks :
They are “high-capacity telecommunications networks” based on optical technologies and component that provide routing and restoration at the wavelength level as well as wavelength-based services.
An optical network consists of wavelength routers and end nodes that are connected by links in pairs. The wavelength-routing switches or routing nodes are interconnected by optical fibers.
Components Of Optical Network
Optical Switch :An optical switch is a switch that enables signals in optical fibers
Electronic controller : It is an interface for upper-layer protocols to manipulate the switch, and also maintains information about the network topology, wavelength occupation, and port mappings of the optical switch.
Network Nodes: Network nodes are connected by WDM links (fibers)that carry a number of optical channels.
Categories of Wavelength Switches
.Non-reconfigurable switch:
These types of switches, for each input port and each wavelength, transmit onto a fixed set of output ports at the same wavelength
