DEFINITION:
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a learning system that recognizes the need to develop problem solving skills and helping students to earn necessary knowledge and skills. It is in the process of dealing with real problems that students learn both content and critical thinking skills.
Problem based learning as a student centered approach which uses carefully clinical problems as content for student to: -
Define their learning needs
Conduct self directed enquiry
Integrate theory into practice
Apply knowledge and skills to develop a solution to define a problem
HISTORY OF PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
PBL has its origin at McMaster University, Canada. In 1966, a small but influential group of educational innovators put together a new curriculum. The leading members of this group included Jim Anderson, Howard Barrows, and (founding) dean John Evans.
ESSENTIAL QUALITIES IN A PROBLEM:
It should be in line with the need, and interests of a particular group of pupils.
The problem should be valuable and timely.
It should impart functional and rich learning.
The pupils should feel that the problem is their own.
STEPS INVOLVED IN PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
Here the teacher act as a guide or facilitator
The students are usually divide into groups.( 8 or 10 members)
One student is elected as a leader, one as a secretary and one as a time keeper.
ROLE OF A TUTOR OR TEACHER IN PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
The tutors (teaching staff) play a central role as a facilitator
Develop real-world; complex and open-ended problems such as might be faced in the workplace or daily life.
The most important skill of a PBL-tutor is to know when to intervene, but more importantly when not to do so, in order to get the group working with their own resources.
IMPORTANCE IN NURSING
PREPARES NURSES TO MANAGE CHANGES IN HEALTH CARE
DEVELOP LIFE LONG SKILLS TO BE TRANSFERRED IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE RELATED COMPETENCIES
ENQUIRY BASED LEARNING
PROMOTES GROUP PROCESS , PARTNERSHIP, CREATIVITY
SELF DIRECTED INDEPENDENT LEARNING
