INTRODUCTION
With traffic expanding fast, expressway seems to be only solution for some of the heavy density corridors
An Expressway system is planned and designed to provide a high speed and high volume road facility catering to the needs of increasing fast moving passenger and goods traffic along the highway connecting principal cities of a country.
EXPRESSWAY ?
An EXPRESSWAY, also known as a highway, superhighway, auto route, autobahn, autostrada, dual carriageway, freeway, Auto snelweg or motorway, depending on the country of discussion
Is a type of road designed for safer high-speed operation of motor vehicles through the elimination of at-grade intersections.
. Such highways are usually divided with at least two lanes in each direction. Because traffic never crosses at-grade, there are generally no traffic lights or stop signs.
NEED FOR EXPRESSWAY NETWORK
The demands of high traffic particularly along certain corridors connecting import areas of economic and commercial activity cannot be met in future by traditional solutions of widening of existing highways.
Thus, for meeting the demand of traffic emanating from industrial and commercial centre, there is no choice for but to plan for independent Expressway type facilities to allow for fast, unhindered and safe movement of vehicles leaving and existing national highway routes to take care normal traffic
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF EXPRESSWAYS
90 meter right of way with initially 4 lane construction expandable to 6 lanes in future.
An Urban Expressway consist each lane carriage way width of 11 meters with a central reserve of 2.3 meters and a hard shoulder of 3.3 meters
TRAFFIC FACILITIES
INTERCHANGES: Besides other facilities, the location, and layout of interchanges can be critical to the operation of Expressways
TOLL PLAZAS: Unlike usual toll plazas provided on toll bridges, the toll plazas on expressways will be functionally different. At the entry, the expressway user would only collect the card and pay the toll at the exit. As a result the service time at entry and exit would vary substantially
EXISTING EXPRESSWAY NETWORKS IN INDIA
Construction of first Expressway in India from Ahmedabad to Vadodara for the length of 95 kms with design speed of 120 kmph. This expressway is a 4 lane divided highway and 6 lane bridge structures.
Construction of Mumbai to Pune Expressway with a distance covered 132 kms with a design speed of 120 kmph.It consists 6 lane Highways divided in centre by a 7 meter wide divider. It reduces the travel time of 2 hours for connecting these two cities. complete fencing to avoid animals/humans crossing expressway.
Construction of Expressway between Bangalore and Mysore covered a distance of 130km with design speed of 120 kmph
