Abstracts: A pump with a through-shaft is not completely sealed. It is a challenge to the entire pump industry to minimize leakage. There are countless variants of shaft seals, reflecting the diversity of the pump industry, and the need for specific solutions for individual situations. Gland packing has constant leakage of fluid, because if the leakage is not provided to the packing, it will burn out due to high friction. In other words, pumping fluid provides lubrication to the pump shaft and the packing surfaces in contact. Due to constant leakage, wastage of fluid is more. It consumes more energy than it should be consuming if it would be in properly maintained and sealed condition. Friction between shaft and the gland packing adds to the losses. Pump consumes more energy for pumping required amount of fluid than it would have otherwise consumed. This project is aimed at studying various mechanical seals available and selecting appropriate seal for the pumps in order to control leakage of fluid and prevent energy consumption.
