Introduction:
Today the wind power generation is the minor way for the generation of power and those are mostly held by the help of the wind mills. Where they require Cost efficient transportation of windmill components to the installation sites. There should be fewer variations in wind speed for regulated supply. Considerably it should contain large area to generate large energy. It affects the people nearby and also it is expensive for making repairs and replacement of the parts. Hence magenn air rotor system is designed for the ease manner of generation of the power
History:
Magenn Power draws on over 31 years of R&D in advance materials and structure. Designed the Magnus Spherical Airship starting in 1978.Fred Ferguson (founder of Magenn Power) patented the Magnus Airship in the 1980s. It won the Canadian Government Award of Excellence in 1984. And the Philip Petroleum Award for Science 1985.Magenn Power has built and tested several small MARS prototypes in 2006, and 2007.
In April of 2008, Magenn Power made history by having the world's first rotating airship.
Description:
This magenn air rotor system is a Wind Power system Any where it has distinct advantages over existing Conventional Wind Turbines and Diesel Generating Systems including: global deployment, lower costs, better operational performance, and greater environmental advantages.
MARS is a lighter-than- air tethered wind turbine that rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, generating electrical energy. This electrical energy is transferred down the 1000-foot tether for immediate use, or to a set of batteries for later use, or to the power grid. Helium sustains MARS and allows it to ascend to a higher altitude than traditional wind turbines. MARS captures the energy available in the 600 to 1000-foot low level and nocturnal jet streams that exist almost everywhere.
It rotates about a horizontal axis in response to wind, efficiently generating clean renewable electrical energy at a lower cost than all competing systems. This electrical energy is transferred down the tether to a transformer at a ground station and then transferred to the electricity power grid. Helium (an inert non-reactive lighter than air gas) sustains the Air Rotor which ascends to an altitude for best winds and its rotation also generates the "Magnus effect" which provides additional lift, keeps the MARS stabilized, and positions it within a very controlled and restricted location.
(This is the same effect, discovered in the mid 1800's, that creates lift when a spherical or cylindrical object is spun while moving in a fluid. A dimpled golf ball, hit properly, has a back spin that causes it to lift in flight. A baseball curve ball pitch uses the Magnus effect. Basically, a back spin causes a low pressure region to form above the object and high pressure to form below, resulting in lift. A large object like the Magenn Air Rotor creates substantial lift, so much so that the device should actually work in a wind, without using a lifting gas).
Construction:
All competing wind generators use bladed two-dimensional disk-like structures and rigid towers. The Magenn Power Air Rotor system is a closed three-dimensional structure (cylinder). It offers high torque, low starting speeds, and superior overall efficiency. The closed structure allows Magenn Power to produce wind rotors from very small to very large sizes at a fraction of the cost of current wind generators.
The other construction details are as below
• The MARS is constructed with Composite Fabrics used in Airships. the fabric will be either Dacron with an inner laminated coating of Mylar to reduce porosity and an exterior coating of Tedlar which will provide ultra-violet protection.
• MARS is filled with helium gas, which is inert and non-flammable. Helium is a light inert gas and the second most abundant element in the universe.
• Depending on size, either DC or AC generators can be used, with rectification as necessary. In all cases the rotation speed is stepped up by a simple gear arrangement. The MARS which produced 10 kW unit will be approximately 7.5mx18.2m when inflated.
• The MARS 10 kW unit will require slightly over 10,500 cubic meter of helium. MARS units that operate over 150 feet will have a lighting system including individual lights that are placed every 50 feet on its tether. The lights will flash once per second.
• Necessary lighting on the Tether to meet FAA (Federal aviation administration) regulations.
Working:
• The Turbine Filled with Helium is deployed into the with the help of a tether made from a Vectran.
• Vectran is the high-performance multifilament yarn spun from liquid crystal polymer, which is stronger than Steel with high Strength to Weight Ratio.
• The wind turns the blades, which spin a shaft, which connects to a generator and makes electricity. Utility-scale turbines range in size from 50 to 750 kilowatts.
• The wind rotates the turbine at a speed of 30 to 60 rpm.
• A reduction gear box is provided to increase the speed to 1200 to 1500 rpm for the generator to produce electricity.
• The wind turns the turbine which spins the generator and the electricity is generated.
• This electricity is sent to ground by the tether and can be consumed readily, stored in batteries for later use or can be supplied to grid.
Conclusion:
It would be ideal for the country like India which having vast verities in geographical landmarks to implement such power stations as it could be installed where it could be. This Kind of technology can reduce our Dependencies on Fossil Fuels which are Depleting at a rapid rate. As there is no Pollution in this system Green Energy can be produces which can reduce green house gases. As it can be near Demand centers cost on Power lines is reduces.
