Our cocktail menu at Lavaash is inspired by my childhood memories, places where I grew up, stories that I heard from my father, people and practices around me that influenced my mind. It started at the back of beyond, the rural land of West Bengal - Bihar border, largely devoid of modern civilization those days, a fairly crude and rudimentary life filled with tribal stories, folklore, gang wars and black magic. I was quite fortunate enough to be born in a very progressive and educated family. Towards the later part of my teen years I moved into the glittering civilized modern city of Calcutta. I am trying to bring back all the memories and stories of my childhood and teenage years growing up in this belt. Some part of my family was in the business of bottling country liqueur and hence there were many stories of drinking and drunk people, hardly anything to drink as it was always a taboo. Carew Company (the famous Blue Riband Gin was born here) was the local brewery and made its presence felt every time there was rain as they would release the sludge and the breeze would carry the toxic smell across miles. Anyone who has grown up in a town with a brewery will associate with this repulsive smell. Gin plays the lead role in our cocktail menu as it is the most preferred white spirit of the house. Incidentally my first drink with my brother in law Dr Das also happens to be the Blue Riband Gin, fun memories!! This menu is dedicated to two stalwart Bengali actors, one who is forever drunk – Late. Keshto Mukherjee, and another one who is forever green – Late. Uttam Kumar.
Bera chalao phuara .. Gin, sherry, champagne, rum! Cheers, Saby!
