Lightweight multi-material structures are gaining a lot of attention in a number of industries, particularly where a balance between weight reduction, performance improvements and cost compression is required. Magnesium alloys, such as ZE41A rare earth zinc alloy, meet the first two requirements; however, they are susceptible to corrosion and relatively expensive. The hybridization of light structures, for example the combination of magnesium alloys and aluminum alloys, is currently being considered as a potential solution to this problem.
