A comparative study designed to arrive at causal inferences about the hypothetical relationships between the risk factors and the result. Analytical studies identify and quantify associations, test hypotheses, identify causes and determine if there is an association between variables, such as between an exposure and a disease. Statistical procedures are used to determine if a relationship is likely to have occurred only by chance. Analytical studies usually compare two or more groups or data sets.
