Energy Efficiency and GRIHA
Why Green Building ?
“Unknowingly, the architecture and building community is responsible for almost half of all greenhouse gas emissions annually."
The objective is to evolve a strategy to reduce energy use in buildings so as to reduce energy costs and the emission of greenhouse gas into the earth’s atmosphere.
“A green building is designed, constructed and operated to minimize the total environmental impacts while enhancing user comfort and productivity.”
Green Building Features
Energy efficient measures results in an over all 45% reduction in green house gas emission. (compared with a conventional building)
Green Building Design Considerations
1. Sustainable Site planning
2. Building design Optimization
3. Energy Performance Optimization
4. Renewable energy utilization
5. Water and waste management
6. Solid Waste management
7. Sustainable Building Material & Construction Tech.
8. Health, Wellbeing & Environmental quality
Building Design Optimization
Optimize building design to reduce the conventional energy demand Plan appropriately to reflect climate responsiveness, adopt an adequate comfort range, less air-conditioned areas, day lighting, avoid over-design of the lighting and air-conditioning systems.
Steps followed for this Study are –
o Climatic Analysis
o Solar Exposure Analysis
o Shading Design
o Day light Analysis
o Window Optimization
o Artificial Light Analysis
o Daylight Integration
Climate Analysis
Solar Exposure Analysis
With this analysis the annual solar insulation in the existing orientation and in the ideal orientation of the proposed building can be measured and also the most critical facades of the building from solar exposure point of view are detected for protection.
Shading Design
Various options of shading devices are recommended on the critical facades of the building to cut the critical summer sun (HSA & VSA) and allow and winter sun to come in with maximum visual clearance.
Daylight Analysis
Day light simulation is done with the above shading device and proposed glazing specifications, to check the adequate level of daylight factor inside the building and recommendations are given to allow maximum daylight with minimum glare & heat
Window Optimization
The modified specifications for windows on various orientations are given, which attain adequate day-light with specific shading device & glazing options
