It is an "intelligent" way of living a healthy life. Beginning April 1, pensioners in Pune will receive smart cards to obtain medical benefits from the Central Government Health System (CGHS), anywhere in the country.
While initially the new pensioners who register under the CGHS will be provided the smart card from April, the computerized system will allow at least 84,999 Pune beneficiaries to take advantage of this installation in phase. Dr. S R Pashupati, Additional Director of CGHS, told The Indian Express that smart cards will be delivered first to employees and new retirees who have signed up. "It will take time to feed the data into the computer on the details of each person in the family, collect their photographs and other information and then issue a smart card. The process has been launched," said Dr. SB Nadoni, senior regional director for family health and well-being in the regions of Maharashtra, Goa and Daman and Diu.
CGHS is available in more than 25 cities while CGHS employees living outside the CGHS areas are entitled to reimbursement for medical care and treatment under the rules of central services (medical care). The computerization project for CGHS dispensaries in Pune is being completed, Nadoni said, noting that this smart card can be used by any member of the family. Up-to-date patient reports and details will be accessible at Delhi headquarters once the data is fed and the computerization process is over. The Headquarters will then receive details of the need for medicines at various dispensaries, Nadoni said.
According to Pashupati the medical history of patients, their record of monthly drug supplies and, above all, their identifications with photographs will be fed into computers.
