The Kalka–Shimla Railway is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding
villages. The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built in 1898. to connect Shimla, the summer
capital of India during the British Raj. At the time of construction 107 tunnels and 864
bridges, were built throughout the course of the track.
The railway was declared a heritage by the Himachal Pradesh government in 2007, and
in 2008 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongwith the other Mountain
Railways of India.
Barog Tunnel
The Barog Tunnel (also known as Tunnel No. 33) with a length of 1143.61 m is the
longest tunnel in the Kalka - Shimla Railway. At a speed of 25 kilometers per hour,
trains take about 2.5 minutes to cross the tunnel. It is the straightest tunnel in the world,
which is associated with local tales and legends. Barog railway station immediately
follows the tunnell. Barog (named after Colonel Barog) is a small town which was
settled in early 20th century during the construction of the Kalka - Shimla Railway.
Colonel Barog was a British railway engineer who was in charge of creating a tunnel
through a mountain in the Kalka - Shimla Railway.

D) A comparatively late entrant on the Kalka-Shimla section is the Shivalik Queen, which is a luxury
coach. It is divided into two portions consisting of two coupes each. The coach is equipped with
