NITROUS OXIDE SYSTEMS(NOS)

WHAT IS NOS?
It is actually the acronym for Nitrous Oxide Systems, the largest manufacturer of nitrous oxide injection system likelt wha t you see in Fast and Furious
Nitrous oxide is a chemical compound used as an oxidising agent to increase an internal combustion engine’s power output by allowing more fuel to be burned than the normally case would be
How NOS enhances vehicle performance
Basic principle behind the use of nitrous is it supports the process of combustion and enhances the engine power
Pure oxygen is never provided otherwise complete engine will be exploded
Nitrogen being inert in nature does not react with any other atom instead produces a cooling effect which takes away much of the heat generated
WHY NOT INJECT OXYGEN INSTEAD OF NITROUS OXIDE?
Oxygen cannot be compressed into liquid as it causes a huge problem
It has to be cooled really cold to get it liquid by allowing it to boil off slowly which is bit impractical for a car
Pure oxygen will result in too wild a combustion, resulting in a blown engine
ADVANTAGES OF NITROUS OXIDE
Nitrous atoms released absorbs the heat and helps carry it away
It cools the intake temperature by 60 t0 75 degrees Fahrenheit and every 10 degree Fahrenheit reduction gives about 10% horsepower gains
On top of the extra power provided by the extra oxygen, we get 6-7% horsepower gain from the cooling effect
ADVANTAGES OF NOS
the NO systems are portable
can be easily installed
are cost effective
increase the engine’s power from 25 H.P to greater than 500 additional H.P
increases H.P even on a frozen surface
RELIABILITY CONCERNS
Due to greatly increased cylinder pressures, the engine as a whole is placed under greater stress, especially parts involved with the combustion chamber
Can experience major engine damages, such as cracked or destroyed pistons, crankshafts, connecting rods
Severe damage can occur if a problem occurs in the fuel system; an engine running with nitrous oxide depends heavily on the proper air to fuel ratio to prevent detonation
LEGALITY CONCERNS
nitrous oxide injection systems for automobiles are usually illegal power adders.
for example countries like Australia doesn’t permit the use or fitment of nitrous oxide injection systems, Sanctioning bodies in motor sports such as IHRA allows nitrous oxide use in some classes but bodies like NASCAR and NHRA have fined many drivers for doing so.
though use of Nitrous is legal in street driven automobiles, only if the feed line from the bottle is disconnected
