the first step in the project was to understand the existing products, market conditions and the
need for such a device. A quick market study was conducted to gather information about
international brands, local brands the economic dynamics of the product in the country.
A compilation of the models available in India, and those imported were done to assimilate the
overall scenario This reveled some very interesting facts about the pro and cons of existing
products. It also gave an insight into the target price brackets and expectation levels of the user.
Also products like tricycles, scooters , modified cars etc were considered in the study to make a
connective evaluation of the need and how it was fulfilled till now.
An user study was undertaken to assess the actual user conditions, aspirations and medical
requirements. Information was gathered by means of observations , casual chatting and informal
discussion. The reveled a series of issues that could be tackled directly or indirectly by the product.
A Lot of issues brought forward were direct problems which could be addressed by the wheelchair
but some actually were social or economic and was were not taken into consideration.
Ergonomics
The correct dimensional proportions of the product were
quite important as it's a assistive device that is in direct
and complete contact with the human body.
A brief but focused study of the various ergonomic and
accessability factors were undertaken.
Standards
The wheelchair had to be designed for mass production and had to confirm to stringent international
and national standards for selling powered assistive devices in global markets. Thus a detailed study
of the parameters and specifications was undertaken to suitably incorporate them in the design.
Major Functional criteria like speed, load capacity, strength, clearances, dimensions etc were all
within limits in the final draft of the design.
Concepts
A range of concepts and ideas were evolved from the analysis phase. The concepts were freely developed and then a selected few were taken forward for detailing.
