Ultrasonic machining
Ultra sonic machining.ppt (Size: 303.5 KB / Downloads: 160)
Basic Principle
The cutting vibration which Tool uses in the ultrasonic machining process begins with converting a high-frequency electrical signal into an oscillatory mechanical motion. This motion is acoustically transmitted through a metal tool holder and cutting tool assembly. This linear oscillation is typically at a rate of 20,000 times per second, and, when used with an abrasive slurry flowing around the cutting tool, microscopic grinding occurs.
Advantages of USM
Any known hard material can be machined.
It is a noiseless process.
No heat generated at all.
There are no high speed moving parts hence there are no human hazards.
Complex shapes can be achieved.
Can be used for machining conductive as well as non conductive materials.
Limitations of USM
Abrasive slurry needs to be replaced now and then.
MRR is low.
Not suitable for heavy stock removal.
Cost and maintenance is very high.
Power consumption is also very high.
Applications
Cutting of internal threads in ceramics and glasses.
Cutting and identations on diamonds.
USM drills are used by dentists and doctors.
For making wire drawing , punching, blanking dies.
