FUZZY LOGIC
INTRODUCTION
A representation of a system with a model and an implementation of that model to reason with and provide solutions are central to many disciplines of science.
An essential concern of system models is to establish the relationships between system input variables and output variables. In cases of complex systems, conventional modeling approaches usually do not perform well because it is difficult to find a global function or analytic structure for such systems.
In this regard, fuzzy system modeling (FSM) – meaning the construction of representations of fuzzy systems models with fuzzy techniques and theories provide an efficient alternative which has proven to be quite successful.
WHAT IS FUZZY LOGIC?
Definition of fuzzy
Fuzzy – “not clear, distinct, or precise; blurred”
Definition of fuzzy logic
A form of knowledge representation suitable for notions that cannot be defined precisely, but which depend upon their contexts.
ORIGINS OF FUZZY LOGIC
Traces back to Ancient Greece
Lotfi Asker Zadeh ( 1965 )
First to publish ideas of fuzzy logic.
Professor Toshire Terano ( 1972 )
Organized the world's first working group on fuzzy systems.
F.L. Smidth & Co. ( 1980 )
First to market fuzzy expert systems.
Theory of Fuzzy Logic
Lotfi Zadeh introduced the theory of Fuzzy Logic in his paper, Fuzzy Sets (1965).
Zadeh introduced for the first time the concept of fuzziness as
opposed to crispiness in data sets.
Fuzzy Logic provides a method of reducing as well as explaining the system complexity.
Whenever there is uncertainty, fuzzy logic together with approximate reasoning can apply.
The Idea of Fuzzy Sets
Fuzzy sets are functions that map a value, which might be a member of a set, to a number between zero and one, indicating its actual degree of membership
A degree of zero means that the value is not in the set, and a degree of one means that the value is completely representative of the set.
