What is Petroleum Power
Petroleum also known as crude oil is a naturally occurring liquid consisting of a complex mixture of combustible hydrocarbons.
Where does it come from
As organisms die they sink to the bottom of the sea.
Over time the organism decay and get buried in silt.
Bacteria remove most of the oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, leaving mainly hydrogen and carbon.
How does it work
Petroleum is used in a exothermic combustion reaction.
During this process the hydrocarbon bonds with oxygen producing heat.
The heat used in a variety of ways but primarily running a thermal engine.
Gasoline combustion
2C8H18 + 25O2 -> 16CO2 + 18H2O
Petroleum + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water
Refinary
Different hydrocarbon chain lengths all have progressively higher boiling points, so they can all be separated by distillation.
Crude oil is heated and the different chains are pulled out by their vaporization temperatures.
Reciprocating Engine
A fuel and air mixture is injected through a poppet vale into a combustion chamber
The poppet valve closes and the spark plug, or other initiator causes the fuel to burn.
The fuel combusts and causes a release of energy in the form of thermal heat
The thermal heat expands causing the piston to move down turning the crank shaft.
The exhaust gas is then ejected.
