the SMILE (Smart MIddleware, Light Ends) system is described here. It is among the the earliest systems built in the area of distributed event stream processing. It integrates the publish-subscribe and continuous query models of the middleware and the data systems respectively with each other. In the system, the information producers such as the sensors, applications, or databases all produce streams of event like the RFID data, , news, stock market news etc and the subscriptions to derived views are specified by the consumers. The queries maybe extremely specific. a dataflow network of computations is deployed by the smile network which process events from producers, compute derived views and deliver continuous and timely updates of subscribed views to consumers. The major challenges faced by SMILE include:
-rigorously defining the semantics for correct state deliver
-semantics implementation in the presence of failure,
-distributing these computations over a network
-message flow scheduling and control.
-integrating this technology with other components etc.
The SMILE system can be applied to any "sense and respond" scenario which involves responding to data as and when they are generated. The applications are:
-monitoring financial opportunities
-in financial industry for detecting fraud
-alerts in data centers
-RFID application and inventory management
