Uncompressed multimedia (graphics, audio and video) data requires considerable storage capacity and transmission bandwidth. Despite rapid progress in mass-storage density, processor speeds and digital communication system performance demand for data storage capacity and data- transmission bandwidth continues to outstrip the capabilities of available technologies. So, recent growth of data intensive multimedia based web-applications requires compression of the signals. For still image compression, the ’Joint Photographic Experts Group ‘or JPEG standard has been established by ISO and ISE, but the performance of these coders generally degrades at low bit-rates. So, recently the wavelet transform has emerged which provides substantial improvements in picture quality at high compression ratios.Over the past few years, a variety of powerful and sophisticated wavelet-based schemes for image compression have been developed and implemented. Because of the many advantages, JPEG2000 standard has been established. There are number of transforms by which image compression can be done. The present seminar report aims to study various transforms like DFT, DCT, FFT, and HAAR which are most commonly used in Image Compression. Also brief study of JPEG and JPEG2000 is also done.
