Railway crossing collision avoidance system
Using this system, road vehicles in the vicinity of a railway crossing are alerted as a train approaches the crossing. In this invention, A signalling device which operates together with a GPS receiver located in the train sends out a signal to a receiver located at the railway crossing to provide an alert of the train's location with reference to the railway crossing. For providing the railway crossing enough data to calculate the velocity and time of arrival of the train at the crossing, the signal is sent to the railway crossing reciever continuously at predetermined intervals . The reciever then processes the information and sends out an alarm signal to approaching road vehicles as the train nears the crossing. The the road vehicle on recieving the alarm , provides various levels of alarms to the driver depending on the closeness of the train to the crossing.
the velocity and time of arrival of the train can be derived from the location coordinates of the oncoming railway crossing. These coordinates are pre-stored at a train's onboard processor or each railway crossing transmits its location coordinates to oncoming trains. The position of the train with respect to a particular railroad crossing is calculate dfrom here. For calculating the velocity and arrival time of said rail vehicle in response to said tracking data, the train and the railway crossings has processors onboard. There is also another mechanism for transmitting an alarm signal to road vehicles approaching said railroad crossing when said rail vehicle is at a predetermined distance from said rail crossing.
