Tata Sky is a provider of direct broadcast satellite television in India, using MPEG-4 digital compression technology, which transmits using the INSAT-4A and GSAT-10 satellite. Incorporated in 2004, Tata Sky is a joint venture between the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox. Its main competitors in satellite television and other DTH service providers are - Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV, Sun Direct, Reliance Digital TV, DD Free Dish and Videocon D2H. It currently offers 475 SD channels and 85 HD channels and services along with many other active services. Tata Sky has signed an agreement with French firm Technicolor to supply 4K set top boxes from early 2015.

Tata Sky is a strategic equity alliance in the nature of the joint venture between the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox, which hold 70% and 20% respectively. In 2008, Singapore-based Temasek Holdings acquired the 10% Tata Group. Tata Sky was incorporated in 2001, but launched services on August 8, 2006. STAR's parent company, 21st Century Fox, owns an international group of DTH companies including Sky Italia in Italy and Sky in the United Kingdom. The company uses the Sky brand owned by British Sky Broadcasting. On January 9, 2015, Tata Sky became the first Indian operator of DTH to offer 4k set-top-boxes to its consumers.

Tata Sky was the second operator to launch DTH or direct services at home in 2006. At that time, the company decided to use an ISRO satellite. In 2005, Tata Sky signed a contract with ISRO for the provision of satellite space on the INSAT-4A satellite. In 2007, one year after the launch of the DTH player, Tata Sky asked for more space to increase the number of channels they broadcast. Additional space was promised in 2009 on GSAT-10 satellite, a satellite to be launched on the INSAT system. The GSAT-10 was launched in September 2012, but Tata Sky has not used transponders until today.

Accreditation ISO 27001: 2005 - In March 2009, Tata Sky became the first DTH service provider to receive ISO 27001: 2005 accreditation, the benchmark for information security. ISO 27001: 2005 is an international standard that provides specifications and guidelines for the establishment and proper maintenance of an Information Security Management System (ISMS).
