The South Western Railway is one of 16 railway zones in India. It is based in Hubballi and comprises 3 divisions, namely Hubballi, Mysuru and Bangalore. The fourth division in Kalaburgi will be out soon and preparations for the work have already begun. The area came into existence on April 1, 2003. The South West Railroad covers most of the railway lines in the state of Karnataka (with the exception of the Konkan Railway), the western parts of the district of Dharmapuri and Hosu Taluka Of Tamil Nadu.
Development
Karnataka has the lowest number of electrified and / or double electric lines compared to other states in India (5%).
The section between Bangalore-Pandavapura (128 km) and Mysore-Srirangapatna (7 km) has doubled and opened to traffic. The section including the Srirangapatna station and the Cauvery bridges is still completed, due to the change of the Tipu sultan's arsenal. The Bangalore-Hubli line is doubling in isolated patches. While Bangalore-Tumkur doubled and opened to traffic in 2007, progress in other sections has been painfully slow. The duplication of the Arsikere-Chikjajur section of the same line was completed in 2015, while the doubling of the Tumakuru-Arsikere` and Huballi-Chikjajur section is ongoing. The Bellary-Hospet line is fully folded and open for traffic, Hubli-Gadag and Londa - Miraj - The Pune line is bending. In the railway budget of 2016, the electrification of Bangalore-Omalur was also announced (via: Hosur, Dharmapuri). In February 2017, the Bangalore-Hassan railway line was completed via Shravanabelagola.
