History
The Government of India and the USSR signed an agreement, signed in New Delhi on March 2, 1955, for the establishment of an integrated steel plant in Bhilai with an initial capacity of one million tonnes of steel ingots.
The main consideration for Bhilai's election was the availability of iron ore in Dalli Rajhara, about 100 km from the site; Nandini limestone, about 25 km from the plant, and dolomite in Hirri, about 140 km. The plant was in charge of the inauguration of the first blast furnace by the then president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 4 February 1959. The plant expanded to 2.5 million tonnes in September 1967 and a new Expansion to 4 MT was completed in 1988. The main focus in the 4 MT stage was the continuous casting unit and plate mill, a new technology in the steel smelting and conformation in India.
