Firefox OS is a discontinued open source operating system - designed for smartphones, tablets and smart TVs - designed by Mozilla and external contributors. It is based on the rendering engine of the Firefox web browser, Gecko, and the Linux kernel. It was commercially released for the first time in 2013.
Firefox OS was designed to provide a complete, community-based alternative operating system to run web applications directly or those installed from an application market. Applications use open standards and approaches such as JavaScript and HTML5, a robust privilege model, open web APIs that can communicate directly with hardware, eg. Cell phone hardware. As such, Mozilla with Firefox OS competed with commercially developed operating systems such as Apple's iOS, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Phone, BlackBerry's BlackBerry 10 and Jolla's Sailfish operating system. In December 2015 Mozilla announced that it would stop the development of new smartphones Firefox OS, and in September 2016 announced the end of development. In July 2017, it was reported that the Indian telecom operator Jio would be launching new feature phone with the operating system derived from Firefox OS and the applications are purely in HTML5 and CSS.
History
Firefox OS was publicly demonstrated in February 2012 on smartphones compatible with Android. By December 16, 2014, the OS phones of Firefox were offered to 14 operators in 28 countries around the world. On December 8, 2015, Mozilla announced that it would stop sales of the smartphones Firefox OS through the companies. Mozilla later announced that smartphones Firefox OS would be discontinued in May 2016, as the development of "Firefox OS for smartphones" would cease after the release of version 2.6. At the same time, it was reported that Acadine Technologies, a startup founded by Li Gong (former president of Mozilla Corporation) with several other Mozilla employees among its employees, would assume the mission of developing carrier associations for its own operating system Firefox Derived H5OS .
In January 2016, Mozilla announced that Firefox OS would power Panasonic's UHD televisions (as it was previously announced that Firefox OS "would rotate to connected devices"). In September 2016, Mozilla announced that work on Firefox OS has ceased, and all codes related to B2G will be removed from mozilla-central.
