The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is an essential diagnostic tool that measures and records the electrical activity of the heart. A wide range of cardiac conditions can be detected by interpreting the ECG signals recorded. These qualities make the ECG a perfect instrument for monitoring and supervising the patient. The ECG machine commonly used for diagnosis and monitoring at present is expensive and stationary. The objective of this project is to develop a small wireless sensor system to make the patient more mobile without losing the reliability of the ECG sensor. Wireless patient monitoring has become a more established technology and a natural step in this progress is to develop a reliable ECG system that contributes to cable reduction in medical and physical therapy environments. The main objective of this thesis is to create a small reliable system of wireless ECG sensor at low cost. This thesis investigates the possibilities of creating a small ECG sensor system that can be connected wirelessly to a handheld device that can graphically display ECG signals. A small prototype integrated ECG sensor system has been developed. Using Bluetooth ™ technology, the ECG sensor system can be connected to a personal digital assistant (PDA). The software for the PDA has been developed for the presentation of the 2 channel ECG sensor. With the use of a microprocessor, the analog signal is digitally converted to a specific sampling frequency based on the resolution of ECG signals. The prototype is well suited for patient monitoring when a low noise, energy efficient system was created to be powered by a cell phone battery.
