Pineapple industry producers pay taxes to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR), which is responsible for collecting, managing and disbursing levies and levies on behalf of the Australian agricultural industries. Governments require agricultural levy and levies on primary producers at the request of the industry to collectively fund R & D, marketing, biosafety and waste testing programs.
The levy is paid on pineapples produced in Australia and sold by the producer or used by the producer in the production of other commodities. The rate of fresh and export pineapple collection is $ 5 per tonne and the processing pineapple is $ 2 per ton. Hort Innovation manages the proportion of pineapple collection funds for R & D (fresh and exported $ 2.90 per ton and processed $ 1.90 per ton) and marketing ($ 2.00 per ton). Separately, Plant Health Australia (PHA) manages plant health programs ($ 0.10 per ton). In 2015/16 total income from the pineapple rate was approximately $ 259,000: $ 172,000 R & D tax and $ 86,000 marketing tax. Hort Innovation has developed this SIP to help strategically invest the collected pineapple collection funds in the priority areas identified and agreed upon by the pineapple industry. The ability to fulfill all articulated strategies (and investments) in a shocking way will be determined by the ability of the statutory contribution to provide the resources to do so. This plan represents the collective vision of the Australian pineapple industry for its R & D and marketing needs over the next five years (2017-2021). The intention is for this plan to provide the model until 2025 to accommodate crop cycles. This plan has been developed in consultation with Australian pineapple tribe contributors through a synthesis of prioritisation exercises, direct consultations and workshops with the Hort Innovation pineapple industry, SIAP.
