A pulverized coal boiler is an industrial or utility boiler that generates thermal energy by burning pulverized coal (also known as charcoal powder or coal dust, as it is as fine as facial powder in cosmetic makeup) blowing in the combustion chamber.
The basic idea of a pulverized fuel cooking system is to use the whole furnace volume for the combustion of solid fuels. Coal is ground to the size of a fine grain, mixed with air and burned in the flue gas stream. Biomass and other materials can also be added to the mix. Coal contains mineral matter that is converted to ash during combustion. The ash is removed as bottom ash and fly ash. The bottom ash is removed on the bottom of the oven.
This type of boiler dominates the electric power industry, providing steam to power large turbines. The pulverized coal provides the thermal energy that produces about 50% of the world's electricity supply.
