An internship is a white collar and career workout. Career practices are similar in some respects but not as rigorous as apprenticeship for the professions, trade and professional employment, but the lack of standardization and supervision leaves the term open to wide interpretation. Interns can be college or university students, high school students or graduate adults. These positions may be paid or unpaid and are generally temporary.
Generally, an internship consists of an exchange of services by experience between the student and an organization. Students may also use an internship to determine if they have an interest in a particular career, to create a network of contacts, to acquire a letter of recommendation to add to their curriculum vitae, or to obtain school credit. Some interns find permanent and paid employment with the organizations for which they worked at the end of the internship. This can be a significant benefit to the employer, since experienced interns often need little or no training when they start a regular job. It also helps an employer measure the fitness of a student, since grade-level inflation has undermined the reliability of academic qualifications. Unlike a training program, employment in the completion of an internship is not guaranteed.
