Information processing is developing rapidly in several sectors along with the diffusion of information technology. The same applies to the commodity production and distribution industries, where the bar code system is increasingly used as one of the most useful tools for recognizing the unique information related to each product. Although handy barcode readers are typically used by retailers where small quantities of various products are handled, a system is required to quickly and automatically read bar code data pasted into a continuous flow of products for its use in production sites or distribution centers where large volumes of products are handled. The demands on the site for the functionality and performance level of such systems are quite challenging. For example, it is impossible to specify the location to paste a bar code into a round container like a hat box. Cardboard cartons also come in varying sizes in very large quantities. To address such situations, bar code recognition devices have been developed using the most advanced image processing technology in both soft- and hardware. The notable features are as follows:
1) small bar codes are read from a large transverse area using a multiple chamber;
2) individual recognition is achieved without disturbing the flow of the product by high-speed parallel processing;
3) the camera is able to read objects (bar codes) from a distance of one to two meters (to allow installation more flexibility in the design);
4) support the main barcodes of the distribution industry, such as Code 39 and the ITF; Y
5) the high level of recognition efficiency and safety.
