The structure and control schemes of a STATIC synchronous compensator (STATCOM) using the multi-level fly-capacitor inverter (FCMLI) have been discussed herein. The STATCOM is made by a synchronous source voltage converter (VSI), which generates alternating three phase voltages in phase with the voltage of the transmission system. The multi-level inverter structure of the VSI is used for the realization of STATCOM. In this work three structures of multilevel inverters have been described (fixed diode, cascade and source of flying voltage). The operation of these structures has been studied for the general operation of the inverter and the purposes of compensation. FCMLI is a special structure of the topology of the flying voltage source. A method is used to control the FCMLI which ensures that the voltages of the flywheel remain constant. The previous STATCOM inverter structures and control schemes have been verified through digital computational simulation studies using the PSCAD / EMTDC software package.
