This is another common question in Java newsgroups, made worse by the fact that people who should know better still perpetuate the next myth. When people hear the words "pass by reference," they can understand different things with words. There are some fairly specific definitions of what it should mean, though. Dale King sometimes quotes this: "The lvalue of the formal parameter is set in lvalue of the real parameter."
