Switching is a process for sending packets that come from a port to a port that leads to the destination. When the data reaches a port, it is called an input, and when the data comes out of a port or exits it is called output. A communication system may include a number of switches and nodes. At a general level, switching can be divided into two broad categories:
• Offline: data is sent on behalf of the forwarding tables. No previous link is required and acknowledgments are optional.
• Connection oriented: Before changing the data to be sent to the destination, it is necessary to preset the circuit along the route between both ends. The data is then sent to that circuit. Once the transfer is completed, the circuits can be saved for future use or can be rejected immediately.
Circuit switching
When two nodes communicate with one another via a dedicated communication path, it is called circuit switching. There is a pre-specified route need from which the data will travel and no other data is allowed. In circuit switching, to transfer data, circuit must be set so that data transfer can take place.
Circuits can be permanent or temporary. Applications that use circuit switching may have to go through three phases:
• Establish a circuit
• Transfer the data
• Disconnect the circuit
Circuit switching was designed for voice applications. The phone is the best example of circuit switching. Before a user can make a call, a virtual route is established between the caller and the call receiver through the network.
